The Society of Jesus says Awaba!
The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuit Order, is a religious institute of pontifical right whose mission is to serve God under the banner of the Cross of Jesus Christ and to serve the Church, the Bride of Christ, under the authority of the Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ on earth (Constitutions, Formula of 1540 and Formula of 1550). The Society of Jesus was founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), supported by a few companions from the very beginning, notably Saint Peter Favre and Saint Francis Xavier, co-patron of Catholic missions.
For nearly 500 years, the Society of Jesus has been doing its utmost to fulfill this mission, particularly through the ministry of the Spiritual Exercises—written and lived out by Saint Ignatius of Loyola—and through the apostolate of education, science, and research in colleges and universities. The Society of Jesus is present in most countries around the world and is organized into Provinces and Regions, which are often united through Assistances.
The motto of the Jesuits is, in Latin, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God). This motto expresses the fundamental character of the Jesuit: he always seeks to go further in the service of God, a service that is not primarily a matter of technical competence and qualifications, but which, while requiring such competence and qualifications, begins first and foremost with a deep rootedness in the Spiritual Exercises, which immerses his inner self in the Love of Christ and bears as its outward fruit a life offered to the People of God—that is, the whole of society without distinction—in a constant striving toward progress in the realization of the Kingdom of God in hearts.
