13th Annual Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya Bible Conferences Jésus et la maladie : déconstruction des schèmes traditionnels pour une nouvelle herméneutique

The 13th edition of the Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya Bible Conferences was held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, both online and in person, at the Institute of Theology of the Society of Jesus (ITCJ) in Cocody Angré Château, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event brought together approximately 150 participants, including theology and Bible students, professors, priests and nuns, as well as healthcare professionals.

The morning began with a prayer led by Dr. Aurélien Folifack, SJ, director of the ITCJ, who then addressed the assembly with a welcome message. Dr. Augustin Somé, SJ, director of the Research Department and the Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya Biblical Chair (CB-CLMP), followed by presenting the day’s scholarly framework, thereby outlining the theological and hermeneutical challenges of the chosen theme.

Bishop Jacques Assanvo Ahiwa, the keynote speaker, then delivered a presentation lasting approximately 45 minutes on the passages from John 5:1–18 and 9:1–41. His reflection offered a fresh reading of the Gospel accounts of healing, free from traditional interpretive frameworks and open to a new hermeneutic. Dr. Joseph Zinsou responded to the lecture in about twenty minutes, offering a critical and complementary perspective on the proposals put forward.

After a break, the floor was opened to the audience for a session of discussion and debate that lasted nearly two hours, reflecting the richness and diversity of perspectives represented in the audience. The conference, moderated by Dr. Alexandre NGANDU, SJ, concluded at 1:00 p.m.

This 13th edition has once again confirmed the vitality of the Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya Chair of Biblical Studies as a forum for dialogue between the Word of God, theological research, and the realities of contemporary life

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS

From February 1 to 7, 2026, the Institute of Theology of the Society of Jesus (ITCJ) is honored to host a global academic event organized by NExUS (Nurturing Exegetical Understanding of Scripture) under the direction of Father Paul BERE, focusing on the theme: “Biblical Hermeneutics and Cultural Diversity.”

International scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America have all gathered in Abidjan to explore the impact of cultural diversity on biblical interpretation. Through conferences and workshops, the main goal is to understand how our cultural diversities enrich and shape our reading and understanding of the Bible. This second edition (following Rome in 2023) marks an important milestone in building a truly global hermeneutical community. It is an honor for the ITCJ and Côte d’Ivoire to host this international scholarly dialogue!

On March 22, 2025, the 12th edition of the Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya Chair Bible Conferences was held at the ITCJ. The overall theme of this conference was Achieving forgiveness and liberation. Two presentations, a personal account, and a panel discussion made up this morning’s training session, which was attended by nearly 300 participants both in person and online.

Following Dr. Augustin SOME, S.J.’s presentation of the case, Dr. Aurélien FOLIFACK, S.J., delivered a paper on the topic:Anger and conflict management. This subtheme draws inspiration from the teaching of Ecclesiasticus/Sirach (Sir 28:1–7). This profound text warns against the destructive effects of anger and vengeance, while encouraging forgiveness and reconciliation. It also warns against the harm caused by gossip and slander, emphasizing the importance of self-control and kindness in human relationships. In a context where resentment can take root and grow, cultivating attitudes of forgiveness and love is vital. Ecclesiasticus reminds us that anger is the enemy of peace, and that managing our emotions is essential for building healthy and lasting relationships. As Christians and engaged citizens, we are called to become peacemakers, to embrace forgiveness as a deliberate choice, and to learn to manage our conflicts wisely.

The second presentation was given by Dr. Augustin ATSIKIN, S.J., on the topic: The Double Healing in Jonah: The Healing of the Prophet and the Healing of the People (Jonah 4:1–11). The healing of the prophet Jonah, manifested through his repentance and obedience, is linked to the collective healing of Nineveh, marked by social and moral transformation. This process of “double healing” shows that the path of forgiveness, healing, and liberation does not concern only the personal/individual dimension, but also has a profound social/communal impact. Forgiveness and liberation are not merely individual acts, but collective processes. Healing is not limited to a spiritual or emotional act; it requires a collective commitment to reconciliation and liberation. Jonah, as a prophet, struggles with his own prejudices and anger, but he is also called to be an instrument of healing for a people in distress. As if to say, mercy, whether divine or human, can transform a nation, just as it transforms an individual.

Moderated by Dr. Jean MESSINGUE, S.J., the panel brought together a legal expert, the founder of a new community, a psychologist, and an imam to discuss the topic: Forgiveness, the path to peace, an interdisciplinary approach that examined the concept of forgiveness and its impact on individual and community rehabilitation.

The conference aimed not only to inspire participants to adopt a more peaceful and empathetic approach in their daily interactions, but also to raise their awareness of the importance of liberating forgiveness in building a harmonious and united society.

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the conference “Ecclesia in Africa: The Africanization of Christian Communities” was held in the auditorium of the Institute of the Society of Jesus (ITCJ). This conference was organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in Africa.

There were three speakers: Ludovic Lado, Rodrigue Naortangar, and Paul Béré, all members of the Society of Jesus. Father Jean-Paul Savi, S.J., served as moderator. The conference began with opening remarks by the director of the ITCJ, Father Aurélien Folifack, who reviewed the history of the Chair and the ITCJ’s various research initiatives. The head of the Baraza Chair then briefly presented the conference’s objectives and Ecclesia in Africa.

Ludovic Lado, S.J., then presented his topic, “Inculturation Through the Lens of Pentecostalism.” He discussed Pentecostalism’s ambivalent attitude toward African cultures. On the one hand, it affirms the African worldview; on the other, it rejects various African customs and traditions. He lamented the fact that the African Church has not seriously engaged in dialogue with African religions. Toward the end of his lecture, he showed us a ten-minute video of his visit to a sacred forest in the Bamboutos region of Cameroon. After that, there was a question-and-answer session, followed by a twenty-minute break.

Rodrigue Naortangar, S.J., presented his lecture titled “Ecclesia in Africa and Inculturation: A Theological Commemoration.” After providing a brief overview of the events leading up to the Synod, Naortangar elaborated on the concept of inculturation, discussing its evolution and current interpretations.

The third and final lecture was delivered online by Paul Béré from Italy. It was titled: “Ecclesia in Africa and Synodality.” He focused primarily on the concept of the Church as the family of God highlighted by Ecclesia in Africa and demonstrated how it has been widely adopted by the universal Church, and how, even if not explicitly stated, its characteristics are reflected in the synodal Church. This was followed by a question-and-answer session.

The conference concluded with remarks by Father Jean Messingué, director of the research department.
In terms of attendance, the conference drew 85 in-person participants and 61 remote participants, for a total of 146. The in-person attendees were primarily students and faculty from the ITCJ, as well as nuns. Also in attendance were students from UCAO, Jesuits from CERAP, and parishioners from surrounding parishes.
